Kairos

White Hinterland is singer-songwriter Casey Dienel, a true chanteuse, if we may, who is not averse to singing in French (her EP, Luniculaire, is en français), nor is she a stranger to experimental arrangements (they color Luniculaire in neon) or classically jazzy vocal stylings (her debut LP, Phylactery Factory, is full of nightclubby atmospherics). On Kairos, Dienel takes us to a new place, one full of synth pulses and reverb swirl, a hazy, otherworld of dreamy pop. Using her classically trained voice to paint brighter tones over spare beats and ghostly plumes of sound, songs like “Begin Again” and “Bow & Arrow“ work within a pop construct, but barely: something resembling hooks and choruses keeps the tracks from floating away. There are both jazz and experimental touches as play here, for sure, but when Dienel croons — hauntingly, and beautifully — on spacey tunes like “Thunderbird” and “Cataract,” genre talk goes out the window. Who cares? “Icarus” is a stunning, gossamer moment to savor.
