Tommy Keene has spent a lifetime chasing the perfect power-pop tune, and he’s succeeded on many occasions. Behind the Parade continues his winning streak. A track as immediate as “Already Made Up Your Mind” fits comfortably next to Keene’s oldest masterworks. His consistency is a little mind-boggling. The Bethseda, Maryland singer-guitarist has never made a bad album. With tracks such as “Behind the Parade,” “Running for Your Life” and “The Long Goodbye,” he’s in the zone. The guitars are crisp and intimidating, able to do real damage against the solid rhythm section. Keene makes adult pop that never loses its energy. It isn’t mellow, easy listening nor is it complicated. It’s smart, focused material with a tough, single-minded approach. There are no superfluous arrangements, no self-indulgent songs. He’s the same man who gave the world “Back Again (Try…)” and the album Songs from the Film back in the ‘80s. His songs continue to deliver a pop-rock punch second to no one.
