Troubadours On the Rhine

Troubadours On the Rhine

Canadian singer/harpist/pianist Loreena McKennitt gives her fans an intimate view of her music with this impeccably recorded live performance. Recorded in the studios of German radio station SWR1 with support from Brian Hughes on guitar and Caroline Lavelle on cello, Troubadours on the Rhine is exactly as it was performed. No overdubs, no sweetening: just McKennitt's flawless voice bringing life to material from throughout her career. The radio-station visit was part of McKennitt's 2010 promotional tour in support of The Wind That Shakes the Barley, and several tunes from that album are given captivating performances here, along with a chilling version of "The Lady of Shalott." McKennitt's performances are otherworldly, smooth but never slick. She’s emotionally honest and transcendent, invested in literature and classical motifs while expressing a worldview that’s solely hers. Yeats' "Stolen Child" comes to life in her hands and through her immaculate voice. McKennitt likens this album to a living room concert in front of a few friends. The intimacy is palpable.
