The Truckin' Sessions

The Truckin' Sessions

Trucking songs were once a vital segment of American country music culture. Yet as radio demographics changed, the unique body of albums dedicated to long-haul drivers evaporated. Dale Watson is one of the few modern songwriters to recognize that trucking culture is still alive and well, and more than ever deserves its own line of tunes. Watson excels when working within a single theme like this, and The Truckin’ Sessions is one of his more earnest and focused albums. Not only are the songs here inspired by subjects relating to trucking; the rhythms are also conjured from the feeling of driving atop America’s highways. “Good Luck ‘n’ Good Truckin’ Tonite” reflects the tightly percolating rhythms of barreling down the highway, while “Makin’ Up Time” feels more like a wide-open cruise down a sunny stretch. Watson clearly had a lot of fun making the album, and it's unquestionably a lot of fun to listen to, but what makes it special is its underlying tone of reverence and sincerity.
