Black Cat Oil

Black Cat Oil

This Atlanta combo continues its distinctive sound built around twin slide guitars, further refining its potent hybrid of blues, rock, and country. Tom Gray defines the band’s collective attitude with his parched, whiskey-seasoned vocals and evocative songwriting. Together with co-lead guitarist Mark Johnson, he turns Black Cat Oil into a celebration of Deep South mysteries and sensual pleasures. The album’s title number embodies the overall mood with its snaky, furtive groove and bewitching lyrics. “Neon Jesus” and “Wishbone” take a similar trip into the outskirts of respectability, urged along by the sparse yet insistent rhythms of bassist Franher Joseph and drummer Marlon Patton. There’s sympathy for the underdog in tracks like “Down and Dirty” and “Sunshine,” as well as a carefree spirit blowing through “Applejack.” While danger and intrigue seem to dominate the album, “Walk Out in the River” offers glimmers of hope amid the hard times. The band’s cover of Mississippi Fred McDowell’s “Write Me a Few of Your Lines” wraps up this gritty but ultimately life-affirming release with a burst of bluesy fervor.
