Consisting of Deer Tick’s John McCauley and Robbie Crowell, former Black Lips singer Ian Saint Pe, Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin, Dead Confederate’s Hardy Morris, and Six Finger Satellite’s Bryan Dufresne, Diamond Rugs are a bona fide supergroup. Their second album, Cosmetics, is jammed with smart hooks and assured performances that capture a raw rock ’n’ roll spirit. Tracks like “Voodoo Doll,” “Think,” and “Blame” are songs that each member’s official band would beg to keep. This is all first-rate stuff, brought to life on one-inch eight-track tape in Nashville. “Clean” even sneaks a touch of Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns and Money” into the schedule.
