Reset

Reset

On his sophomore solo album, Isaac Carree enlists an impressive roster of guest stars to expand the horizons of his sound. Reset is an ambitious project that finds the gospel veteran leaning in a modern R&B/pop direction without sacrificing his sanctified content. Carree’s emotive tenor is in fine shape as he avoids grandstanding in favor of a smoothly persuasive style. Case in point: “Clean This House,” a prayerful confessional ballad cowritten with R. Kelly (who adds his trademark vocals to a remixed version of the track included here). Songs like “Lifestyle” (a mellow acoustic number about living your faith 24/7) and “Knock Knock” (a reggae-slanted celebration of God’s transforming power featuring rapper Twyse) are unified by Carree’s warm and inviting delivery. The natural single pick is “Famous,” standing out for its ’70s-style soul groove and praise-filled lyrics. “But God” finds James Fortune contributing exuberant vocals, while “So Glad” gives such luminaries as Kirk Franklin, Lecrae, and Kierra Shead turns at the mic. The themes of personal change and healing are constant throughout Reset.
