Blue Rider

Blue Rider

Zachary Cale taps a deep well of inspiration on his fourth release. Dropping a full band in favor of sparse arrangements and a spacious sound, he uses light reverb, ambient noise, and understated sonic touches to give these songs texture and depth. The interplay of graceful fingerpicked guitar and percussive strumming—as best heard on “Dear Shadow”—is the dominant approach here with organ, electric guitar, and drums used sparingly throughout. There's an undercurrent of melancholy, especially on “Unfeeling,” “Hold Fast,” and “Blood Rushes On” with its pedal steel, subtle drumming, and backing vocals. Yet Blue Rider is ultimately uplifting and inspiring. Cale walks this emotional tightrope with a reedy drawl, gentle melodies, and finely wrought lyrics. The result's a moving and evocative album.
