Blood Speaks

Blood Speaks

This striking British electric folk duo brings about surprising tonalities that transform the usual folk and blues tropes into modern ethereal-psychedelic poems reminiscent of Sandy Denny's days in Fairport Convention. The gorgeous vocal weaves at the core of "Feel It Coming Near" are equaled by the solo vocal flights at the start of "Hideaway," which recalls the springlike rebirth at the heart of so much graceful folk music. Recorded in the urban environment of West London's Ladbroke Grove, Blood Speaks—like much of Smoke Fairies' music—is inspired by their evolving feelings regarding their surroundings. The title track serenades their newfound calm in the busy city, while much of the album addresses their need for travel and discovery (especially the road tune "Take Me Down When You Go"). "Version of the Future" turns in chiming guitars to move against the haunting backing harmonies. Sweet and alluring, Smoke Fairies speak to the future while never losing what was special about the past.
