I Love You, Go Easy

Devon Sproule’s observations about life’s little blessings and absurdities have rarely been sharper (or more engagingly presented) than on I Love You, Go Easy. Fans of Sproule’s work will be pleased to find her expansive lyric sensibility and feel for billowing melodies very much present here. What’s added is a heightened jazz emphasis that lends a sophisticated note to such emotionally subtle tunes as “The Faulty Body” and the title number. A kind of magical realism pervades these songs, turning anthems of personal resolve like “If I Can Do This” and “Now’s the Time” into fantasy landscapes through the richness of their language. Sproule’s supple, caressing vocal style and the album’s distinct arrangements (emphasizing woodwinds, brass, and odd synthesizer daubs) bring out the tunes' idiosyncratic qualities. Some tracks—especially “The Unmarked Animals” and “Monk/Monkey”—are excursions into ambient sonic zones. A stripped-down cover of Terre Roche’s bittersweet “Runs in the Family” helps balance the album’s more obscure moments.
