Recorded over a year’s time with longtime producer David Odlum, Bones + Longing is a grand accomplishment. The massive, dense production on “Iona” gives the impression that Gemma Hayes’ fellow countrymen U2 left a mark on her. Hayes says it’s an uptick in reverb. However, there’s still a raw quality to the beginnings of “Dreamt You Were Fine” and “Joy” that assure us that Hayes’ heart, always her most endearing quality, is still within reach. She’s a lifelong musician who knows that one moves either forward or not at all. It’s all quite beautiful, especially “Palomino” and the tense, pulsing “Chasing.”
