Kilimanjaro (Remastered)

Kilimanjaro (Remastered)

The Teardrop Explodes was Liverpool's most volatile band, barely able to keep a lineup together long enough to put out an album. In the end, the English group managed two official albums with varying lineups, with a third being assembled from tapes after its breakup. This "remastered" edition of Kilimanjaro is the 2000 issue, which features the original 11-song debut album, along with the single "Reward" and additional bonus material, mostly b-sides. ("Reward" had been jammed onto the album's first side in the early '80s after it proved the band's most successful single to date.) "Sleeping Gas," "Bouncing Babies," "Treason," and "When I Dream" were early hits for The Teardrop Explodes; here they're in album form. "(Read It In) Books"—composed by Teardrop leader Julian Cope and Echo & The Bunnymen's Ian McCulloch—was recorded by both groups. The album manages to be poppy without being blatantly commercial, psychedelic in spots without being precious or too groovy. It was a sign that the '80s would have bands of its own to keep rock 'n' roll moving forward.
