Bossa nova tends to dominate the music exported out of Brazil, but there are certainly plenty of sexy Brazilian alternatives like samba, electronic, jazz, MPB (pop), and Tropicalia. Present-day singer Toco seems to soak all the above up and distill it down to a sensual groove that works for backyard barbeques, lounges, and even serious listening. Here working with a crew of Italians (he's based in Italy, and this is released by an Italian-based label), Toco has a soft voice that floats over the top with a classic Brazilian subtlety to his delivery. The modern groove-based music rides percolating percussion and funky bass as guitar, warm analog keyboards, and a jazzy horn section lend support. The results recall the classic ‘60s or ‘70s sound of Jorge Ben Jor or Marcos Valle, but there are also interesting twists like the addition of the String Island Quartet that lend a timeless feel to the sessions. Highlights include “Rainha” and “Ciqana” (which both also feature singer Nina Miranda), as well as the classic-sounding “Meu Rio” and the acoustic guitar–driven “Mane.”
