Lifted Off the Ground

Lifted Off the Ground

Lifted Off the Ground marks another step in Chely Wright’s journey from Nashville-style country towards a more personal form of expression. As a singer/songwriter, her work avoids easy clichés in favor of thoughtful explorations of conflicted relationships, family issues and related topics. She takes some chances, indulging in dark humor in the buoyant “Notes to the Coroner” and drifting into spacey introspection in “Snow Globe.” A palpable rage can be heard in the scathing “Damn Liar” and the seething “Object of Your Rejection.” “Wish Me Away” is a poignant example of her sensitive treatment of the post-breakup blues. Producer Rodney Crowell enlists top session players like guitarist John Jorgensen and bassist Michael Rhodes to give these tracks a clean, bright folk-pop sound. Wright doesn’t seem to be aiming for hit singles here. Rather, Lifted Off the Ground is best appreciated as a suite of self-revelatory songs, written with the intimacy of a letter to an old friend.
