Extraordinary

This is an incredible album. Every single piece is wonderfully written, and every time I listen a smile is painted across my face. This is a beautiful album that every single person should own. Buy it right now. You won't be disappointed.

They don't make them like this anymore

Here's an album where you can really hear the four long years it took to create. With "Calling All Dawns", Christopher Tin has made a true work of art that almost anyone can enjoy, and on many levels.

Much has been said about "Baba Yetu" along with the other upbeat tracks that bookend the album, but it is in the under-mentioned "Night" section, ironically, where the album shines brightest. We know Chris' music can be joyful, epic, and uplifting, but from "Lux Aeterna" to "Hymn Do Trojcy Swietej", he achieves a new level of depth and emotional resonance through some truly heartbreaking music. "Lux" grows from its simple beginnings and sparse text into a lush outpouring of orchestral ear-candy. "Caoineadh" (pronounced "Keen", and my personal favorite on the album) features the wonderful singer-scholars Anonymous 4 delivering a solemn dirge that evolves from the haunting, often unusual harmonies of the opening to an expressive solo performance against a bare, ominous drone. After this comes the orchestral climax that is more than satisfying. "Hymn" covers the same emotional ground and is, once again, beautiful and heartbreaking - though by its choral conclusion we are already preparing for the inevitable return of day. And for those who might quibble about the length of this track, you have a 1:45 right after it.

I wanted to give that section of the album proper recognition, but the entire album is a labor of love and a great success. There is something in here for everyone. Music teachers and students take note: there are many delicious examples of thematic unity to be explored here. Congratulations to Christopher Tin for this achievement. Now it is up to fans to spread the word and support this independent artist so that he can continue to give us music like this.

A Masterpiece

While Baba Yetu was written in 2005 for the video game, Civilization IV, I didn’t hear it until May of this year when I was watching a video of the dancing waters at the recently-opened Burj Dubai. I found the song to be incredibly moving and with just a little Googling, found Christopher Tin’s web site. I was delighted to learn he had an album in production and spent the entire summer eagerly anticipating its release. Chris didn’t just meet my expectations, he far surpassed them.

I highly recommend this work for anyone who appreciates orchestral and choral masterpieces.
