Wildwood Flower

Wildwood Flower

Had she never met Johnny Cash, June Carter would still have a claim on country music history as daughter of Mother Maybelle Carter. You don't get much closer to the roots of the genre than that, and June's farewell, Wildwood Flower, brings her story full circle. Recorded within a year of her and Cash's 2003 deaths, the album mostly revives Carter Family classics with the aid of close friends and family members. The feel of these autumnal performances is suffused with impending loss and unstinting devotion - to music and to life. It's not a slick album; without the participation of an indie label like Dualtone, we'd likely not have heard it. That would've been a shame. It has much to teach fans of Cash and Carter about their shared journey together.
