Chorus of the Saints (Bonus Track Version)

Chorus of the Saints, the American debut release by Australian quartet Revive was co-produced by Third Day’s Mac Powell. Acting as mentor rather than dominant force, Powell oversees an album of buoyant, melodically memorable tunes, reminiscent at times of Newsboys and other Aussie Christian acts. Revive singer Dan Hanbury flashes a galvanizing vocal presence as he leads his band in surging, celebratory numbers like “Can’t Change Yesterday,” “Power,” “Stay,” and the title tune. Tyler Hall’s bracing guitar riffage sets an urgent keynote on such tracks as the upbeat shuffle “Don’t Look Anywhere Else,” the ‘80s-style arena rocker “Wonder Why,” and the ecstatic chant-along tune “Promise of Tomorrow.” “You Know” (a hymn to God’s majesty featuring Powell on vocals) find Revive working in a softer mode. “Distant Memories,” a blazing, horn-accented track contrasts the fleeting events of mortal life with the eternal glories of heaven. Chorus of the Saints wins points for intelligent songwriting, taut arrangements and a palpable feeling of spiritual joy overall.
