A landmark of Christian pop, The Turning is as noteworthy for its expressions of doubt as it is its affirmations of belief. When Leslie Phillips sings that “Answers Don’t Come Easy,” she really means it, and many of the songs reflect growing frustration with faith leaders and religious entertainers who are more interested in slogans than authentic spirituality. That may make the album sound challenging, but the colorful pop production and insistent melodies help it go down easy.
