iTunes Review
The “chillwave” tag may be a thing of the past by the time you read this (and probably should be), but count Toro y Moi among the original purveyors of said music. South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick is Toro y Moi, and armed with a laptop and other plug-in devices, he makes lovely, airy pop music that’s perfect for a rainy Sunday or a late-night, dreamy come-down from club noise. Opening track “Blessa” is a glistening piece of pop confection, and has a touch of Panda Bear/Animal Collective magic to it; hints of Atlas Sound are evident elsewhere (“Imprint After,” “Minors”), with melancholy, glittering keyboard lines snug inside a languid, hazy wrapping. A ‘70s soul aesthetic is buried/woven into the sound pastiche that is “Fax Shadow,” while tracks like “Thanks Vision” — with its distorted vocal loops, hatcheted beats and majestic washes of subtle ambient sound — show Bundick for the knob-twirling wizard that he is. The title track and “Low Shoulders” are all sunshine and playful, dance-floor swagger. What’s not to love?

An album that brings back nostalgia and a sense of yearning
Chaz Bundick is Toro y Moi. This is one of those albums that stirs up emotions in you. For me, they are mostly positive ones; the kind of music you listen to when your driving on the coast of California and the sun is setting. Or that type of music that gives you a sense of passionate yearning, but you don't know what you're yearning for... Yet. This album is beautifully glitchy and lo-fi, and in every sense strange and melodic.
Today I was sitting at my usual cafe. They have outdoor seating, so I smoke my cigarettes, drink my coffee, listen to my iPod, read/write and take in the scenery and people watch. Today was one of those wonderfully warm and gorgeous days -- I was in Oakland and it was unseasonably warm for this time of year-- and the sky was blue and the clouds were this pristine white. The leaves were all around me and the sun started to set. And I was daydreaming the whole time while listening to Causers of This. This is defnitely a dreamy album with a heavenly dreamy sound. The whooshing melodies with reverberating synths, keyboards, electro glitches, and r & b/hip hop/pop inspired beats make for a great sound. The vocals sound like angels are singing. There's a lot of sweet cooing and "ahhhhh"-ing.
My two favorite songs out of all of them are: "Imprint After This" and "You Hid" because these songs remind me of how I felt about this guy in my life that I let go of awhile back. That sense of yearning for him comes back everytime I listen to these songs.
All the songs are excellent and the album is definitely cohesive. I can pretty much listen to the whole album straight through without skipping around and I'm still satisfied. So I'd defnitely recommend this album to anyone.
Chilled out and funky
If you liked Neon Indian or Washed Out you'll love Toro y Moi. Real funky chilled out beach rock meets Michael Jackson on acid.
awesome sauce.
i first heard of this band when people were talking about it on stereogum. it was so laid back and melodic at the same time that it became an instant favorite for me. and i usually dont say that about anything. this has so much potential.
