For Bach, Nelson Freire concocted a unique collection of deeper cuts from the composer’s catalogue. This album opens with the excellent fourth partita, a stylized dance suite that highlights many of Bach’s greatest qualities as a composer—from his dynamic counterpoint to his more tender, lyrical melodic side. The Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D Minor is an especially absorbing treat, and even more interesting when played on Freire’s piano, which has a distinctly darker, richer sound than the harpsichord, for which it was originally composed.
