Can
Live 1971-1977

Live 1971-1977 was originally released as the CD portion of the Can Box, which featured these live recordings along with other fan-friendly materials. It was released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the group's first official album, 1969's Monster Movie. While songs from Can's various albums do make appearances here, often in well-altered versions, the real draws are the previously unreleased tracks. They illuminate what the group experience was really like in the '70s, with free-form improvisations taking shape over time. "Jynx" (recorded on Oct. 14, 1975, at Universitat in Giessen) is mad, epic genius. It's an organ and percussion–led jam that ascends to pure climax. The rare tapes have been rescued from obscurity and given professional sound mixing to ensure the best quality without losing their vibes. The 37-minute "Colchester Finale" (recorded May 8, 1972, at the University of Essex in Colchester) is plenty grungy, while "Spoon" (recorded Feb. 3, 1972, at Sporthalle in Cologne) is dark and mesmerizing.
