Getaway

Getaway

Oslo, Norway, appears to have a better garage rock scene than most American cities, and Steve Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records label is here to make sure we know about it. This all-female Norwegian group has been rockin’ on Farfisa organs and loud, slashing guitars since 2000. Their fourth album, 2013’s Getaway—their first new studio album since 2005—makes a true rock ’n’ roll fan wish they’d be more prolific. At just 11 songs that waste no time, Getaway could be one long blast. There are unison vocals, harmonies, bass lines cruising the outer perimeter, Farfisa organ that often rises to take a solo, and guitars that love their reverb. They all deliver on tunes like the excellent “Girls in New Jersey” (has Mr. Van Zandt given them an inside p.o.v.?), the hummable “Marks on My Map,” and an ace cover of Kenny Rogers & The First Edition’s “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In).”
