Coming out of Fort Myers, Fla., Plies hit the scene in the ‘90s, finding regional fame via the single "Tell Dem Krackers Dat" and eventually scoring a deal with Miami rap powerhouse Slip-N-Slide Records (home to Trick Daddy and Trina) in 2004. Several mixtapes followed, as well as increased notoriety and street cred after a shooting at a concert in Gainesville. Plies dropped his debut album, The Real Testament, in '07 and charted the huge singles "Shawty" and "Hypnotized." Over the next few years, he put out three more full-lengths, had several more hits, and racked up BET and Ozone Awards. You Need People Like Me is a between-album mixtape that picks up where Goon Affiliated left off, hosted by DJ Scream and loaded with criminally minded, hood-centric joints set to minimalist synth-based production; they're ideally suited for stunting at the club or planning a shootout. While his lyrical structure tends toward the basic—with plenty of chanting and yelling—Plies has a rowdy charisma that's hard to deny. "Really From the Hood," "Ride Dick So Good," and "Come by Yo House" are standouts.
