Double-Wide Dream

Double-Wide Dream

With a “this one’s for the ladies” approach, Casey Donahew’s fourth studio album, Double-Wide Dream, plays like a country-pop version of, say, Bridesmaids more so than Steel Magnolias. “Let You Go” opens with a heavy “I Want You Back” sentiment that’s trimmed in all the warm trappings of ‘70s AM radio gold. “I’d Give Anything” plays harder on the heartstrings; it’s a breakup song where Donahew pines for just one more chance. But by the sentimental “Let’s Not Say Goodbye Again,” Donahew is reconciled with the one that got away. In the smoking country-rock title track, Donahew sings a laundry list of his lady’s attributes, most of which would qualify as illegal. Things simmer down with “Give You a Ring,” an endearing engagement ballad with feel-good melodies and some of the album’s best pedal steel playing.
