Early Winters

Early Winters

The members of Early Winters are the Wolverhampton, England–bred singer Carina Round, the Juno-nominated Justin Rutledge from Toronto, and Angelenos Dan Burns and Zac Rae. Impressively, they wrote the songs for their eponymous debut album via video chat. Yet somehow the breezy opening song, “Tough Love,” sounds like the sort of harmonious guitar pop that can only be crafted when four people are working hard in the same room, where they can solidify their musical chemistry and hammer out vocal parts. Jangling sleigh bells, vintage organ tones, and crisp guitar distortion make the catchy “One Time in Your Life” a confectionary treat—especially for anyone who misses the similar-sounding songs of The Cardigans. “Spanish Burn” is lightly infused with baroque pop trimmings in the chorus, sounding a bit like Feist by way of Au Revoir Simone. The minimal accompaniment of “The Sweater” lets listeners focus on the band’s knack for airtight vocal harmonies.
