Hailing from Baton Rouge, La., Kevin Gates has been making noise for a few years now and is signed to Lil Wayne's Young Money'Cash Money imprint. Like Weezy, Gates has a wobbly, nontraditional voice, lots of verses about drug trafficking, and a penchant for pop-flavored, electro-infused radio rap. The Luca Brasi Story is his ninth mixtape (following well-received joints like Pick of Da Litter, I Don't Know What to Call It Vol. 1, and In the Meantime). Whether he'll ever blow up—or even get an official album in stores—remains to be seen, but his slick-meets-streetwise style will definitely endear him to fans of Rick Ross, Pusha T, French Montana, and the like. Most impressive here are tracks like "Paper Chasers," "Narco Trafficante," "Twilight (War with God)," and the a cappella storytelling jam "Ihop."
