Any chance to re-examine the era when Rod Stewart was at his artistic peak is a good time in terms of reissues. Various expensive collections have featured many of the rarities presented here, so if one already has Reason to Believe: The Complete Mercury Studio Recordings, The Mercury Anthology, and The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998, it'd be wise to analyze this set carefully. An early version of “Maggie May” provides some humorous alternative lyrics. The BBC Radio One performances of “Country Comforts” and “Maggie May” are excellent. To hear Rod laugh and toy with “Lost Paraguayos” shows just how easy his talents came to him. “Pinball Wizard” from the Tommy soundtrack, the single version of “Jodie,” and the alternate versions of Bob Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country” and “You Wear It Well” all make an argument for Stewart being even better before he puts the "finishing touches" on a tune. Genius has its privileges.
