Mind Chaos

Mind Chaos

Portland, Oregon’s Hockey is an unlikely hybrid of ‘80s Brit-pop rhythms and swaggering, soulful American rock (the Strokes meet the Black Crowes, perhaps). Mind Chaos reveals a quartet with uncanny chemistry, resulting in fantastically palatable rock music with real soul, rousing people to dance with abandon en masse (especially in the U.K., where the band has already seen huge success). “Song Away” (produced by Talking Heads’ Jerry Harrison), “Work,” and the first single, “Too Fake,” move on swift, spare drums, handclaps and bongos, strutting guitar chords, and lithe synths. Ben Grubin’s voice is made for radio, one so keyed into the groove of the moment that the lyrics practically deliver themselves. After five or six years honing their chops, and moving from Southern California (the heart of the recording industry) to Portland, OR, fame arrived on their doorstep — every band’s dream. We think it’s well earned; commercially appealing rock with this much energy and soul doesn’t come around too often.
