Greatest Funk Classics

A funk-soul collective that actually included several different bands—Love Peace & Happiness, The Nite Lighters, The Mint Juleps, and The New Sounds—The New Birth (a.k.a. New Birth Inc., New Birth Revue) was the brainchild of producers Harvey Fuqua, Vernon Bullock, and Tony Churchill. In their various incarnations, they would release some 20 albums between 1970 and 1982, scoring numerous hits thanks to their unusual multifaceted style, airtight musicianship, positive messages, and ultra-soulful sound. This excellent compilation features covers and originals alike, and it's an absolute must for lovers of hardcore, real-deal funk. There are a few mysterious omissions, but considering how thick the collective's discography is, this is an outstanding sampling of their work. It's absolutely stellar and highly recommended. Don't miss "Serenade for a Jive Turkey," "We've Got to Pull Together," "Do the Granny," and "Pretty Words Don't Mean a Thing (To Me)."
