Over the years The Pretenders have become the live and recording unit for Chrissie Hynde; band mates come and go, but Chrissie soldiers on. These live recordings from her 2009 tour find Chrissie back in fighting form. After a few years where it sounded as if she might be most comfortable with the power ballad-like dynamics of “I’ll Stand By You” (that appears here in fine form), Hynde is back charging full force through a catalog that includes such snarling classics as “Talk of the Town,” “Brass In Pocket,” “Precious,” “Middle of the Road” and new anthems such as “Boots of Spanish Plastic” and “Don’t Cut Your Hair.” Her tough-biker-chick image shines through “Tattooed Love Boys” and the manic slam of “The Wait.” Her guitar playing slashes through the tight punch of “Kid” and the shiny jangle of the Kinks’ “Stop Your Sobbing.” “Cuban Slide” furthers the band’s prowess with a Bo Diddley thud, while “Back on the Chain Gang” still aches with the memory of the band members she’s lost along the way.
