Known in certain circles as “The Guitar Whisperer,” Bay Area six-string luminary Derek See takes time off from The Bang Girl Group Review to record a similarly groovy solo EP. She Came This Way boasts six songs that sound like they were recorded in the mid-'60s. The opening title track resonates with period-correct tones that jangle and chime like an intersection between Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds, right down to searing fuzz leads that recall Neil Young’s Gretsch White Falcon guitar. By the following “Love Is the Plan,” it’s obvious that See knows his way around the fretboard (he’s also The Stooges' touring guitar tech). But more importantly, he’s well-versed in writing the kinds of timeless tunes that can only come from a lifetime of collecting top-shelf vinyl records. His multi-part harmonies recall the congruence of brother acts like The Everly Brothers or The Kinks. Still, there’s a balance between retro and relevance that fans of The Brian Jonestown Massacre will immediately dig. “McQueen (Slight Return)” is a standout instrumental that could perfectly score a psychedelic biker flick.
