Broken Hearts Will Kill Us All

Broken Hearts Will Kill Us All

Led by Tommy Dietrick (a musician and producer who played briefly with The Brian Jonestown Massacre in the early '00s), L.A.’s Sky Parade have been skirting the kind of recognition earned by BJM and other bands with the same psych-pop vibe. (See The Warlocks and The Dandy Warhols; both bands contain members who've partnered with Dietrick over the years.) With money-draining tours, a near-catastrophic van collision, and recent divorce (hence the title of this work), Dietrick keeps pushing, clearly made of stronger stuff than some. Broken Hearts Will Kill Us All is 45 minutes of heady, hip-moving psych-rock, drenched in the kind of pounding rhythms, airy vocals, iridescent percussion, and guitars that evoke not only the BJM/Spiritualized sound but also warm and fuzzy memories of The Church and the ‘80s Paisley Underground scene in L.A. Listening to the slink and strut of “I Want You,” the galloping thrill that is “Dead Man’s Knee,” or the gently narcotized lope of “Dive into the Sun” will give fans hope; Dietrick has a lot of rock ’n’ roll umph in him, and he’s not to going to let it fade away.
