The Sojourners

The Sojourners

Old-time gospel doesn’t get any more authentic. Will Sanders, Ron Small and Marcus Mosley share generations of experience between them, and blending their voices, they sing with rare authority and conviction. Produced with imagination by Steve Dawson, The Sojourners provides these old pros with a fresh setting to exercise their talents. The trio makes “Nobody Can Turn Me Around” jump with vigor, infuses “Strange Man” with an easy swing and fills “By and By” with the joy of a down-home camp meeting. The smooth simmer of “Brother Moses Smote the Water” can’t help but lift even an unbeliever’s spirits. At the opposite extreme stands “Death Don’t Have No Mercy,” rendered with a stark, unsparing sense of tragedy. Contemporary material like David Hidalgo’s “The Neighborhood” provides balance to the classic gospel tunes offered here. The trio’s backup group — featuring Dawson’s crisp guitar work — adds blues and Memphis soul shadings to the tunes.
