Wonderful!
Adams 30 Minute Symphony is wonderfully performed by the LAPO under Dudamel. This isn't Mozart, but it's not John Cage either so give it a chance, it's an awesome work.
Dude, what do you think?
It's hard to tell. The Adams piece sounds a bit loose in structure and not one of his better works. Then again I'd give it another chance after hearing some one else other then Dudamel conducting. Given the low price point and the fact that it's the only recording of the work so far you might as well get it. - BZ
More Structureless Sound Effects for Orchestra
For all Adams talent, this seems to be a less inspired piece considering the occasion. My other beef with it is, if you want a real piece of Los Angeles City Noir, you have lots of classic scores to choose from including Waxman's Sunset Boulevard through Goldsmith's Chinatown. Goldsmith's scores from Chinatown and L.A. Confidential seem to figure into the aesthetic here.
I think Adams is a fine composer, but I'm getting tired of the crutch of "improving" on other composers ideas and models: My Father Knew Charles Ives = and Ives piece; Chamber Symphony = Schoenberg's chamber symphony; Century Rolls = "my own Gymnopedie"; El Nino = "Golijov's Pasion segun San Marcos; Flowering Tree = modelled on the Magic Flute; Common Tones = Copland; Christian Zeal = Gavin Bryars "jesus' blood."
Ultimately these pieces will also be troubled over time for their lack of formal argument. Lots of notes equals "busy music" not complex music.
