Unfinished Business

Unfinished Business

Unlike the four original 1978 KISS solo albums, Unfinished Business is a compilation of work by second drummer Eric “The Fox” Carr, released posthumously as a tribute in 2011. (Carr passed away from heart cancer in 1991.) Following an opening snippet of Carr introducing himself, “Just Can’t Wait” sets the tone with late-'80s pop-metal balladry akin to that of Bon Jovi, Damn Yankees, or Whitesnake. A scratchy demo of “Troubles Inside You” spotlights more originality, with skip-along rhythms and cleverly matched vocal phrasing in the verses. “No One’s Messing with You” pumps KISS’s muscled rock through a hard-strutting rhythm section that’s slightly more funky than most of its songs. With the instrumental “Carr Jam 1981,” we get an up-close look at just how much the man loved drumming—check out the amazing solo a third of the way through, which ends up completely taking over the song. Scattered throughout Unfinished Business are insightful samples of Carr discussing things like his audition for KISS and what it took to get him singing on a few of the band’s songs.
