All Hours

Ivy
All Hours

By shifting its songwriting approach from acoustic guitar to drum rhythms and keyboard textures, Ivy creates a comeback that’s been six years in the making. From the opening dance beats of “Distant Lights,” it’s clear that this is a rejuvenated team. Singer Dominique Durand retains her cool, affecting delivery, and Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger and Andy Chase can still write songs that never forget the hooks. The overall emphasis in sound is altered, but the same talents come into focus. “World Without You” is a perfectly cool tune for the nightclub vibe. “How’s Never” explores the 1980s revival that’s hit the 2000s with unusual force. “You Make It So Hard” aims more for the twee pop of Belle & Sebastian. “Lost in the Sun” rumbles through the night air with a sultry pop-to-disco feel. “She Really Got To You” pumps with a modern pop beat, proving that while elements of the group are retro, Ivy is clearly in the here and now.
