Live

Recorded during their 2012-13 tour in support of Sound of the Life and Mind, Live shows Ben Folds Five playing at the peak of their powers. Perhaps the hijinks were greater in the group's younger days, but the poignancy of the performances is clearly the focus here. Even "Erase Me" captures an earnestness behind its shock-value facade. Fan favorites such as "Jackson Cannery," "Brick," and "One Angry Dwarf and Two Hundred Solemn Faces" sound as charged and full of purpose as they did during the band's heyday. Ben Folds easily assumes the role as bandleader. His solo career hasn't been a sea change from his older ways of working, and his camaraderie here with Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee sounds natural and unforced. If anything, it's a shame the three of them didn't simply stay together for all these years, as they sound just as natural running through Folds' solo track "Landed" as the old classics "Narcolepsy" or "Song for the Dumped."
