Newworldson

Newworldson

On their self-titled sophomore album, Newworldson sustain the rootsy exuberance that made their debut album (2007’s Salvation Station) so much fun. Their Christian message is delivered with sincerity and humor, reinforcing rather than clashing with their freewheeling, jam band-style sound. Singer Joel Parisien proves himself a credible blue eyed soulman, turning in especially strong performances on slow-burning testimonies like “Rocky Road” and “Weary.” He comfortably shifts between Latin balladry (“O Lament”), Caribbean exhortation (“Jamaican Praise Medley”) and pure radio-ready pop (“In Your Arms”). Most importantly, Newworldson plays with a well-oiled precision that allows each member to shine while catching fire collectively. On tunes like “That’s Exactly (How I Like It),” “Listen to the Lord” and ”Commander,” the group blends the kinetic funkiness of Sly Stone with the sweaty abandon of British blues-rock. The band hews closely to Bible-centric lyric themes, whether they’re rebuking Satan (“Total Eclipse”) or reaching out to a nonbeliever (“There is a Way”).
