Joseph Arthur is certainly making his presence known in 2008. He’s released a slew of EPs and now this full-length charged with an urgency that illustrates how his band of Lonely Astronauts are coming together. They're a loose-grooved outfit tackling their material with a dexterity and power that reflects their love for the Faces, Replacements, and Rolling Stones, all without calling out their obvious debts. From the opening scratch of the title track, Arthur is climbing the heights with music that builds to surly chaos, as his voice shreds with each inclining beat. The organ squeaks through “Faith” while Arthur twists into a Dylanesque delivery that carries over for “Say Goodbye.” “Surprise Dolls” walks with a Stones-like swagger with a swelling, psychedelic solo stuck to its middle. “Dream is Longer Than the Night” indulges Arthur’s laziest vocals; he squirms in languid delight as the band loiter behind, dropping notes in odd places. Arthur’s determined to find his voice by allowing all his influences to fall wherever they may. The result maintains a sense of wonder and palpable fun.
