Day Late, Dollar Short

Day Late, Dollar Short

Including Thrones' very first and earliest singles, and running up to 2001, this compilation offers completists access to previously hard or even impossible to find material from the Seattle-based veteran of doom, grunge and experimental metal. A one man band, Thrones is the work of bassist Joe Preston, who has served time in the Melvins, High On Fire, Sunn O))), Harvey Milk and Men's Recovery Project, among many, many others. Running his bass through a bank of effects pedals, Preston treats his voice and adds both electronic drums and tape loops, mutilating doom and black metal to create an avant-garde form of noise metal. Opening up with the Kill Rock Stars single, "The Suckling," Day Late, Dollar Short's 19 tracks also feature Rush, Blue Öyster Cult and Who covers, a nearly classical tribute to Candlemass ("Epicus Doomicus Bumpitus") and an alternate version of his signature song and perennial set-closer, "Obolus," in which Preston's high-register vocoder vocals ride atop crashing drums and doom guitars, creating a simply amazing juxtaposition of heaviness and angelic psychedelia.
