Roger Salloom has endured a long, strange trip in the music business. Hailing from the blue-collar city of Worcester, Mass., he landed in San Francisco in 1967. There, his group Salloom, Sinclair & Mother Bear regularly performed at famed venues like the Fillmore and the Avalon, sharing stages with the likes of Santana and Procol Harem, among others. With a gritty sound equal parts folk, blues, and hard rock, the group found a home on Chess Records before disbanding. Salloom would go on to work for years around California and Nashville, eventually returning to the western Massachusetts college town of Northampton in 1980, becoming a fixture of the local music scene. So Glad I Made It is the soundtrack to a 2006 documentary about his life and career. It features 17 songs that showcase his wry humor, everyman storytelling, strong vocals, and working-horse guitar chops. Highlights include his Dylan-esque 1967 demo "Born to Lose," the child custody anthem "I Got the Kids," and the sing-along classic "(Gotta Get) Out of Worcester."
