Written mostly by bassist Frédéric Leclercq and guitarist Sam Totman, DragonForce’s Reaching into Infinity departs a bit from their characteristic sound of chiptunes meets speed metal. The British band's seventh studio album slides along the heavy and progressive-metal side when its athletic riffs (“Ashes of the Dawn”) meet Marc Hudson’s fantastical, energetic singing (“Curse of Darkness”). “Silence” combines aggressively nimble drumming with lightning-quick guitar riffs enfolding catchy refrains. And “War!” is an epic tale of romantic fallout that lauds its thrash roots throughout.
