Should the voluminous 62-song collection The Harvest Years (1969-1973) prove to be more Edgar Broughton Band than you need, consider this abridged compilation, which culls an essential 19 tracks to play like a Cliff’s Notes version. Sequenced nonchronologically, it opens with “Out Demons Out” from the band's 1971 eponymous album. That track is a live recording where audience and band members alike chant the tune’s title over a softly rolling rhythm section before it snaps into a psychedelic blues-rock anthem. The mellower “Hotel Room” from 1972’s Inside Out is another notable number, with a dynamic contrast of folky acoustic guitar strumming against heavily reverberated acid-rock leads. Fans of Captain Beefheart are sure to find familiar ground in “Apache Drop Out,” an epic reworking of Beefheart’s “Dropout Boogie” where Native American tribal beats intertwine with twangy surf guitar. “Call Me a Liar” bestows danceable rhythms with pedaling guitar riffs and a bouncy bass-and-drum combination to make for some of the most underrated biker boogie-rock of the '70s.
