When high schoolers The She’s hit a certain melodic high note, it’s the carefree sound of youth: it evokes the visceral joy of running barefoot on the first spring day, the thrill of careening downhill on a rickety bike, or perhaps the effervescent fizz of falling in love. The all-girl band—formed when the members were around 12 years old—released their first EP (2009’s The She’s) at the tender age of 15. Summer is their third record and first full-length. Dabbling initially in a Go-Go’s-meets-The-Donnas (by way of Shonen Knife) sound, The She’s have moved fully into the sparkling, sunny styles of ‘60s pop, à la The Beach Boys and The Ronettes. Their particular brand is stripped-down, crisp, and efficient, with singer Hannah Valente leading the harmonic forces that are charming enough to soothe any savage beast. Where to start?
