Carry Me

Carry Me

Josh Wilson offers confessions, consolations, and celebrations on his sixth Sparrow Records release, Carry Me. The set has the sort of musical panache and incisive lyrical touch that's earned him a loyal following in Christian music. The Texas-born singer/songwriter continues to excel at delivering faith-based themes without resorting to bombast or finger-pointing; there’s an overriding message of love and forgiveness that makes his tunes feel immediate and very human. Wilson’s warm, high tenor is complemented by a blend of acoustic guitar licks with punchy electric accents and propulsive techno beats. Tracks like the title number (inspired by Josh’s struggle with late-night panic attacks), “Faith Is Not a Feeling” (a perceptive commentary on spiritual maturity), and “Pushing Back the Dark” (an infectious antidote to fear) are uplifting, heartfelt numbers with folk and country underpinnings. “I See God in You” stands out among the ballads for its sensitive portraits of ordinary believers. Wilson combines the spiritual and the personal in “What a Mystery” and “One Safe Soul,” a pair of loving tributes to his wife. Produced with taste by Matt Bronleewe.
