...To This Day

...To This Day

Robert Burke Warren is a wondrous walking contradiction: a southern boy living up North, well-versed in old-time country music, classic ‘60s-70s pop, garage rock (he was a member of the Fleshtones) and modern day singer-songwriters with their cellos and synths. All of this comes to play on his debut album …to this day. Just as the album cover suggests, these are songs obsessed with familial ties and Warren’s place in the chain. “Josephus Cries” reaches back to the Civil War while the album’s closer, “Jacksong” hums along as a simple acoustic guitar lullaby to his son. “Give Me My Love” beautifully evokes humanity’s timeless struggle for peace, love and understanding and the complications reality brings. “Tomboygirl,” “Milledgeville” and “Blue Impala” are snapshots of personal history made public and universal with a shyness that makes for great empathy and allure. Warren yearns for the spotlight, but prefers the shadows. He feels at home with the past, but realizes he must proceed into the future.
