With two members replaced by siblings Sarah and Christian Dugas, Winnepeg, Manitoba’s Duhks deliver their 2008 studio release, Fast Paced World, with an aggressive funk occasionally driving their roots-based country-bluegrass-folk-Afro-Cuban-jazz-soul (whew). The quintet has an unusual knack for finding obscure traditional tunes that resonate with the daily trials of the modern world. “Mighty Storm” recounts a disaster from 1900 that easily applies to the memory of Hurricane Katrina. The title track, one of five originals from new vocalist Sarah Dugas, bemoans the fate of cookie-cutter suburbia with a husky vocal tone. Several instrumental breaks provide insight into the young band’s impressive chemistry, as fiddler Tania Elizabeth’s “Adam’s 3-Step,” banjoist Leonard Podolak’s “Ship High in Transit / Papa Senior’s,” and the traditional “New Rigged Ship” display the group’s gentle, acoustic side. The French-Canadian “Toujours Vouloir” swings with an unselfconscious gaiety that’s immediately refreshing with its tight percussive groove. “You Don’t See It” is straight-forward country radio pop. There isn’t anything this young ambitious group can’t tackle.
