Earthtones

Earthtones

Previously known as Mission:, Crown City Rockers are a live hip-hop group based in the Bay Area, but originally from Boston, where several of them attended the venerable Berklee School of Music. Comprising Raashan Ahmad on the mic, with expert musical accompaniment from Kat 010 (keys), Headnodic (bass & beats), Max MacVeedy (drums), and Woodstock (producer), they are known for their finely tuned chops, intelligent/positive wordplay, and explosive live performances. Earth Tones, their second full-length (though the first released under the CCR moniker) overflows with lush melodies, jazzy arrangements, and uplifting rhymes. The lead single "B-Boy" plays like a chant-along anthem to all the true heads across the globe, "Simple" clowns on one-dimensional MCs, and the disco-fied "Something Pt. 3" is almost too fresh for words. We also get inspired guest verses from local homies Zion and Gift Of Gab, plus a few stellar instrumentals. Stylistically falling somewhere between the Roots and People Under The Stairs, this album is that hard-to-master blend of jazz and hip-hop, funk and soul, beats, rhymes and life.
