The Singles Collection (1992 - 2011)

The Brian Jonestown Massacre have recorded so much music over the years, it’s a bit overwhelming when trying to pick an introductory point. The Singles Collection is an interesting place to start, with the 22 tracks being originally issued as 45s. The band centers around its mercurial leader, Anton Newcombe, (view the essential documentary Dig!), and his frightening antics, but it’s the music that you listen to and this maze of psychedelic to garage to trance-shoegaze rock ‘n’ roll is packed with anarchic excitement. “She Made Me” and “Evergreen” work a dense musical fog, while “Convertible” strips things to a haunting core. “Cold to the Touch” features a powerful mix of trippy guitars and plodding keyboards. “If Love Is The Drug Then I Want to OD” takes the scruff of garage rock and punts it forward with great wit. The final two tracks were originally released under the name Acid and feature heady, slow mellow-outs. Other strong starting points are Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: A Retrospective, Take It from the Man!, Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request and Give It Back!.
