Anthems

Anthems

On his sophomore album, Anthems, the former Red Rocks Church pastor goes for a heroic sound that underscores God’s majesty and boundless love. Ballard’s widescreen style of pop/rock suggests the epochal praise ballads of Delirious?—in fact, he offers a shimmering remake of that band’s “Find Me in the River” here. What gives Anthems its special quality is the spiritual intimacy of its lyrics, combining scriptural themes with deeply personal emotion. Ballard’s singing projects both strength and vulnerability, bringing out both the brokenness and triumph within his songs. Whether he’s riding the celebratory sonic waves of “Why We’re Singing” and “King of Love” or embracing the contemplative modern hymnody of “Immanuel” and “Find Our Rest” (featuring vocals by former Red Rocks colleague Jerrica Matrone), Ballard bridges the gap between intimate prayer and communal worship with a sure touch. Producer Otto Price manages to give the tracks a spacious feel without losing the essence of the tunes amid the roaring guitars and stately keyboards. A simmering, melodically inviting interpretation of Psalm 18 closes on a note of salvation and gratitude.
